Behind The Scenes

TOME_2

If you’re not yet familiar with womenswear label TOME, you need to get aquatinted…fast. The brilliant label by Australian expats in New York, Ramon Martin & Ryan Lobo, is full of modern classics – from the perfect shirt, to an incredible oversized trench, or a sexy slip dress – and is the type of clothing every stylish woman worth her salt wants to be wearing right now…

I’m obsessed with furnishings at the moment as I’m about to move offices. The space is all white walls & floors with a great little balcony to boot.

And so I thought what would look better than a neon Poppet sign on the wall?? Not sure how my new office mate will feel about it but I think it’d be pretty damn great.

Our next Golden Boy feature is the hilarious and uber cute Sara Phillips. I remember attending Sara’s first show circa 2009. Full of velvet, feathers and skater skirts, it’s no wonder I was a fan from the very start.

Concentrating on brilliant digital prints and cool, youthful cuts, Sara makes pieces perfect for the bright-young-thing in all of us – but when it comes to her Golden Boy? She can’t look past a sweater stolen from her boyfriend…

“I love this B-Store men’s grey marle jumper! I actually bought it for my boyfriend but I just could not part with it. Four years later it’s still my go to piece – I love that the seams are not finished and that they roll in on themselves and create their own hem detail. I think I love it so much because it’s so comfortable, it’s just so easy and so oversized that I can layer it over almost anything! “

Our third in the Golden Boy series is the super adorable Johnny Wallace from General Pants Co. I met the mens footwear & accessories buyer at the General Pants showing a couple of months back and his enthusiasm and love of the brand, and brands he works with, was completely infectious. Along with his laid back, innate style (and love of two Poppet favourites; Vans & Vanishing Elephant) I knew he’d make a perfect Golden Boy subject.

As the man responsible for keeping the fellas kitted out in sneakers, eccentric socks and a helluva lot of caps, beanies, backpacks and more, it’s no surprise that the Melbourne born, Sydney based buyer looked to a classic yet always contemporary piece when it came to his Golden Boy….

“My Golden Boy is my Levi’s denim jacket. Taking the plunge by moving to Melbourne from Sydney and not know a single person, this was my very first purchase from General Pants Co. two and a half years ago when I first started working for the brand. This denim jacket is by far the most versatile item of clothing I own and a great piece for layering rain, hail or shine. I’ve enjoyed some really memorable moments in this jacket and it’s been worn to music festivals with a muscle tee, trips overseas with a knitted sweater and to Christmas dinners with my family worn with a crisp oxford shirt. The excessive wear is starting to show with blow-outs in the elbows, but this is no doubt a wardrobe essential – a timeless classic that will be enjoyed for years to come, and never replaced!”

If you’ve swung by Poppet before you’ll probably be no stranger to our next ‘Golden Boy‘ subject, the lovely Amy Kaehne. Amy’s effortlessly cool clothes make everything else in your wardrobe look like it’s trying too damn hard and should just shut up and do as Frankie says: Relaaaax.

The lady herself is the perfect embodiment of the Amy Kaehne label – gorgeous, beyond adorable, and pulls off that whole ‘super-chic-world-traveller’ thing like it ain’t no thang.

Amy was kind enough to let us come and shoot her in her Golden Boy in between working on collections and moving studios….

“My Golden Boy is my oversized patch coat. It was one of the first coats I ever designed and so it holds a real sentimental value. It is essentially a big blanket with a built-in scarf and although I haven’t worn it much this winter, it has been a well loved piece for many years. This coat has also travelled with me throughout the UK and Europe as it doubles up as a doona on the road. The texture and fabric reminds me of growing up in New Zealand in the 90’s when the Swandri jackets were all the rage!”
